Rheim Alkadhi
(Irak, 1973)
ARTISTIC RESEARCH RESIDENCES
November 2019
Intermedia artist who works with images, text, and objects, and topics and references such as the body as an ongoing index. Her work relies on live contexts to generate immediacies and locate collective points of departure. With multiple migratory belongings/trajectories in regions of imposed geopolitical conflict, the perception of authoritarian, imperial, colonial dominance is magnified in everyday life. Thus, her work registers a nonconforming emancipatory feminist existence under such planetary conditions; using mediums like language, artifacts of material reality, and living interactions.
Alkadhi was awarded the Mophradat Grant, Brussels (2017), a fellowship in visual art at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, Italy (2017) and at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2016), where she developed and performed the live-work Köln Phantasm. She has produced works in residence with the Ramallah Municipality, West Bank (2016); at the Autonomous Cultural Center, Weimar (2016); A.i.R, Art Dubai, Dubai (2015) and Sharjah Art Foundation (2014), among others. In 2010 she received the Art Matters and the Center for Cultural Innovation grant. In 2009 she was awarded a Mid-Career Artist Fellowship from the California Community Foundation and in 2008 she received the Arab Fund for Art and Culture grant.
